Along the Barkly Highway - Between Mount Isa and Camooweal
About 50kms west of Mount Isa along the Barkly Highway (aka Overlander's Way) you will come across a very important part of North West Queensland's history.
In 1940, when Northern Australia's defence became a high priority, the Queensland Main Roads Commission was tasked with the job of building a road to link Mount Isa to Tennant Creek.
Prior to 1940, this road was just a track that followed the telegraph line that was erected in 1897.
The road was eventually finished in late 1942. The Barkly Highway that you now travel on was constructed in 1994.
At this important place in North West Queensland's history, you will find a lovely spot to camp or have a toilet break as you continue your travels.
The rest stop location was kindly donated by the Kalkadoon people, was the East/West road is located upon their traditional land.
